Argghh, I was misled by the type of display I had, oh well, I am writing
things up so it can go on the laptop compatibility list, here is the skinny
on setting X in case anyone gets on to setup.

Make sure you are using RH 6.x , and a SVGA server 3.x

X won't start

As root

Run setup by typing setup then enter
choose X configuration tab to Run Tool then press enter
on welcom press enter on OK
Choose the Card mine is a SMILynxEM+ (generic) then enter
Choose monitor IBM 9514-B TFT Panel @ 800x600
press enter on Don't Probe
Choose card memory size 4mb then enter
Choose Clockchip of IBM RGB 51x/52x then enter
Choose the resolution you want I highlighted all 800x600 and enter

Follow through to end using your preferences

Now all should be working
