At least whenever I notice this problem, and get an opportunity to get to
the console (because it invariably screws up sshd as well) there is no
swap or /tmp shortage. What's a better measure of virtual memory than
top? I'll setup a cron job to log my free virtual memory every minute to
get a better idea on this.

It also oopsed on me saturday morning. I'll see if I can glean anythign
useful out of it, but will most likely be begging for help analysing that
too ;)
