Agreed, sort of -- but bear in mind that you have to draw the line somewhere.
I'd like a qmail option instead of sendmail, too, but in both cases (pftpd 
and qmail) the differences aren't trivial, and every added application is
some number of added hours working it into the distribution, debugging, 
documenting, etc...

Probably because it's an ersatz standard.  WuFTP has been around a long time,
it's in wide use, it's reasonably simple to configure, and lots of people are
used to the way it does things.  One of the decisions RedHat has to make is
not just "does the package work well" but also "will the package work well
for new and existing users."

What problems did you have?  I've had both ssh and openssh running on a 
variety of RedHat and Silarious boxes, and most of the catches are pretty
easy to undo.
