Another very good (but free) graphing package that is widely used in the
engineering and scientific world is "grace". I will admit I have not
tried to use it for plotting equations, but it has a very comprehensive
"command interpreter" that it appears would do this relatively easily.
Might be worth a look.

This package uses Motif, but RPMs are available that are statically
linked against Motif if you don't have (or want) Motif. They also have
dynamically linked RPMs and source code available for those who have
Motif already.
