Well I sat down last night for one final try at it.

This time I specified a set of comma separated horizontal frequencies in
XF86Config instead of a range of values and that seems to have done the
trick.

X must have been picking refresh rates that the monitor was not coping with
too well.  Still can't get 1280 though....
