Regarding your video card containing Permedia2 chipset.  I had a problem
attempting to boot directly to graphical login screen.  My video card is
Diamond Fire GL 1000 Pro and it has permedia2 chipset.  I selected the
appropriate driver "Diamond Fire GL 1000 Pro".  It did not work so since the
probe auto selected "3dlabs Permedia2" so I left it as a driver for my video
card and it works great.  If possible try "3dlabs Permedia2"
