  The svga server should do it, the trick is to choose the right monitor
settings.  Take a good look at the settings your using for win95.  Is the
screen defined as 800x600 or 1024x768?  Try choosing an LCD screen for the
same size.  You can also try using a generic monitor, that uses fairly low
settings.  Just choose the same resolution as the win95 is set to use.  I'd
also suggest starting out aiming for an 8bit color depth screen.  Once that
works, save your XF86config file and try for the 16 and 24 bit color levels.
You should be able to get all the way up.  I've used X with those chipsets
before, they worked fine.  Good luck.
