Nope, the correct format is append="mem=128M" (I have to use it here.)

Now, for the first problem, does the motherboar have built in video, or
anything else that would be sharing the main memory?  If so, reduce the
amount of memory by this amount.  Even if you don't have shared memory,
try reducing the amount of memory to 127M and see if that solves the
problem.
