>From /usr/doc/pam-0.68/txts/pam.txt:

Linux-PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules for Linux) is a suite of
shared libraries that enable the local system administrator to choose
  how applications authenticate users.

On my RH6.1 there's lots of docs:

cd /usr/doc/pam*; ls -l
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2046 Jul 23 1999 Copyright
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 10 03:09 html
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 10 03:09 ps
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 67954 Jul 23 1999 rfc86.0.txt
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 10 03:09 txts

Find the various config files in /etc/pam.d (if RH7.0 didn't move them
elsewhere).
