Important to note:

dhcpcd is now INCLUDED with the Red Hat distribution, in with the rest of
the regular RPM's, (not even relegated to Powertools). Although pump is
still installed by default as the dhcp client, the strongest reason for
me to stay with it has disappeared: I try to keep my systems as "vanilla
Red Hat" as possible, because they make things easier to maintain up2date.
(The addition of up2date is an important part of that process). I'll stay
with pump for now, because, as I think Hal would agree:

IF IT AINT BROKE (for me), (I) DON'T FIX IT!!!

pump improved dramatically with 6.2.
Specifying in pump.conf longer timeout and retries seemed to solve the
only problem I had at any site (I've got several sites with different
providers, different media. This one is a telco ADSL) I can
understand why that might help in some instances - if you look at how
telco's dhcp and dns servers appear to be on different wires from the clients
(judging by ip numbers) and look at the funky subnetting the telco's use
to squeeze every number they can out of the little blocks they get, it's
no wonder there are timing problems. There are so many different ways
things are bolted together by providers, it's no wonder we might see
widely different experiences!

However, there is one thought that still comes to mind when one or two
report a problem, but others don't... (sorry, but since Mike didn't say he
tried this, I have to ask - because dumbest "can't happens" happen... all
the time!):
Mike, has your son tried removing and re-installing pump? (Even
tried downloading a copy from a different mirror site?) That might sound
totally impossible, but... I remember when there were questions about
some copies of an RH iso I'd gotten hold of back with 6.1 or so and
getting a copy from another location and installing fresh solved all
the weirdness that I saw then. Now, this isn't M$ crap that has to be
re-installed several times before you get a reliable mix, but, ...
Of course, I also see that you probably could care less by now... stay
with dhcpcd and just kill this thread, right? :-)
