To continue the thread without repeating anything, two additional comments to my previous: For the $49.95 I get an additional dedicated phone line paid for, and from what I have heard, that's the only proper way to do it, for 2 reasons: 1. It keeps digital noise off your voice line 2. A voice line is only "guaranteed" to pass data up to 9600 baud. And you may have a tough time enforcing even that! (The additional line was already installed, but the phone company had to repair it, which they did for Covad, but had previously refused to do for me, when I had ISDN on it and it crapped out.) Covad does the separate line routine as a matter of course, but I don't know if that's part of their free installation, if you don't already have it.
