The only comment I have is that recompiling the kernel is not needed. The
ide-scsi module is already there.

CD writing under red hat. any comments or suggestions for improvement

Rerun lilo.
Add to /etc/conf.modules:
options ide-cd ignore=hdc # tell the ide-cd module to
ignore hdc
alias scd0 sr_mod # load sr_mod upon access of
scd0
After, reboot, "cdrecord -scanbus".
