First thought that comes to mind is the encrypted password deal. I have
not upgraded ina while so I don't know the current state but it there was
an issue with these and connecting to a samba share from win98 and NT
boxes. I don't know what the deal would be using a linux client since I
have never done that.
there was a pretty good explaination in the /usr/doc/samba* tree seems
like it was ENCRYPTED.txt
