RH7 comes with both 3.3.6 and 4.0.1. To switch the X version you need to
run the xf86config, IIRC there is a command line switch '--preferX4' that
will switch the version of X that you are running by default.

Subject: S3 864 chipset & X

Hi !

Just installed RH 7.0 on a system having a Genoa Phantom 64 with the
S3
864 chipset. Starting X causes always a crash, I guess because this S3 chip
is not supported by X 4 - i'm wondering if 7.0 really comes with 4.x.x (as
stated on the RH website). Executing startx and looking at the output shows
the following:

        Xfree86 Version 3.3.6

and crashes with the message and an unknown error

        Config Error: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config:48

        Subsection "extmod"
        ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

        Module section keyword expected

X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown)

I tried to use the generic VGA setting, x starts, but all characters look
like barcode. I will try a lower resolution later on, but I have some
questions:

How do I get my grafic card to work with X 4 ? If there is no way,
will
KDE2 work with X 3.3.6 ? Which version comes with a stock RH 7.0 ???

I would like to run X at some reasonable resolution and refresh
rate. If
the card and its chipset is just to old, what would be a good alternative
as grafics card for X 4. Has to be a PCI card.

Great thanks in advance to anyone who replies (advice and
flames are
welcome).
