I also gave up on Deja's web based service, and my ISPs news service was
cra... (I keep them because the DSL connection has been quite good). I
have had very good service from:

http://newsguy.com/overview.htm

It's not free, but $2 a month is not much of a hardship. That covers
most of the newsgroups I was interested in.
