Don't trust any of the programs on the compromised machine.  If you have
any *data*, not compiled software to save, back it up, then format the
disks with a clean install.

BTW - you only get iptables with kernel 2.4.0, so even if you install RH7,
which I'd recommend (though others may not), you've still got ipchains.

Also, RH7 has everything prepared for kernel 2.4.0, so when it does finally
release, you can upgrade to it.  Just so you know, netfilter has an option
to enable ipchains compatability.
