arg, i need you all's help...=(

i just got 2 new computers, a P3 866 Dell and an Athlon 1.1 ghz that i built
myself. i've had to recompile the kernel on both machines. everything went
fine on the dell, everything still works.

after recompiling on the athlon, things still >work< persay, but nothing
loads automatically.

1) when booting, i get a error when trying to bring up eth0: "Delayed
device initialization". then to get my ethernet working, i have to type:

modprobe eth0
ifup eth0

why doesn't it do it automatically anymore? did i forget to turn on some
kernel option such as "automatically load require modules" or something?

2) this problem really bugs me...
i have GeForce2 cards in both my machines, and so have the nvidia drivers
installed. but get this, i have to reinstall the nvidia kernel drivers
everytime i reboot my athlon or else X won't start! if i don't reinstall the
nvidia kernel drivers after i reboot my machine, X gives me an error message
when booting:
"blah blah, the nvidia kernel drivers don't appear to be installed properly"
its a simple matter of

cd /usr/local/src/NVIDIA-kernel-0.9-5
make install

to fix it, but i shouldn't have to install the dang drivers everytime i want
to run X. i suspect "make install" runs some scripts that change some config
files somewhere, but why aren't those files being saved through reboots?

3) and this problem is the worst!
my sound doesn't work at all. when booting, i see the correct sound module
is loaded and when i login and do an "lsmod", i see soundcore and emuk10k1
are loaded as they should be. infact, even my speakers make noises when
emuk10k1 is loaded. but when i start kde2, no sound, no sound in xmms
either. i have a soundblaster live! with mp3+.

everything worked fine on the kernel that was installed by redhat6.2, but i
have to upgrade to kernel 2.2.18 on the athlon so the i can turn off the
"disable cpu serial number blah blah" option (the athlon will cause the
kernel to panic if this option is on).

thank you so much for the help,
christopher
