I'm not sure why switchdesk isn't working (do you have the switchdesk-gnome.rpm 
installed? you may need that), but you should be able to fix this by firing up your 
favorite text editor and manually editing the .Xlients-default file from your home 
directory.

It should read:

#!/bin/bash          
exec gnome-session

You probably only need the "exec gnome-session" line.

Comment out any other lines in the file (put a "#" at the beginning of the line), and 
maybe stick a few comment of your own in there (to remind yourself in 2 months what 
you did to get this to work).
