Hardware support is in the kernel, which is the same in any Linux
distribution, more or less. Versions differ (don't know if Debian has a
version which supports Linux 2.4.x yet, I'd have to look) but given two
distros with the same kernel version, hardware support should be
identical.

Can't comment there; I have really good luck with rpmfind.net and a
little patience, haven't tried to run Debian lately. I also read
something a little while back about apt-get being adapted to enhance
RPM,

Because they can! ;) Somebody with some time and know-how decides they
don't like Distro X, whips up their own to scratch the itch (open source
motto: don't bitch, fix it), and if other people like it then it gets
popular.
Which you should use comes down to personal preference and applicability
to what you're trying to do, IMHO. Different distributions emphasize
different sorts of applications, security contexts, user nationalities,
etc..
If you have the time, I recommend shopping around between two or three
distributions and seeing which one you like the best. Debian, SuSE,
Slackware and Mandrake all have their dedicated followings, and that
just covers a few of the "general purpose" distrubutions.
I've done that a few times and I've always come back to Red Hat for one
reason or another (usually, "It Just Works"), but your mileage may vary.
