Hi Harry, hi all others,

thank you very much for helping out on this. Some information was in my
initial post which is that I did an upgrade install of RH 7.0 on a running
6.1 (Halloween 4, a german distro from Lehmann's bookstore that really works
out of the box, just that it gets to expensive to get it to the US). I have
it installed on a P133 with 64 MB and a Genoa S3 864 card - which is the
reason for the trouble. I had to go back to X 3 to get it working because the
chipset is (currently) not supported by X 4. I guess the RH 7.0 upgrade
routine forgot to change some important stuff that is different in 7.0 - just
what.

>First off, relax a little.  It must be frustrating having this
>non-responsive problem.

That's why I'm on and off with Linux, because it always so much
aggrevation to get stuff running

I finally removed all X packages with
>--nodeps flag to rpm and did an upgrade install.  Selecting the X
>packages I wanted.  It worked and fixed my problem.  But is quite a
>drastic measure.

I may consider that because this is a try-out machine. I still have 6.1
running with a KDE 1.1 and no probs.

>First off concerning whether there is a difference between 6.0
>/etc/X11/fs/config and the one with 7.0:
>Yes there is.. They may be very important.  I'm not sure:

°snip°

>Question... Why are you using 6.0 config?

I guess it is because of the upgrade install and the installer didn't
bother to upgrade this file.

>David, you have *way* too much stuff installed.  You probably should
>pare it down to bare essentials then get whatever else you need after
>you get things working.

I have a hard time determening what stuff I need to get stuff running,
because most of the time I end up needing more stuff than what stuff is
supposed to use. Either there are some blabla.so.5 files missing or the programs
install fine but still don't run. So much about lack of knowledge and
resulting aggrevation.
But as long as there is someone to help me I look far more optimistic to
it.:)))

°bigsnip°

I will follow your instructions to optimize my installation, but may wait
until I get things going properly. Or is less more in this case ?

>You mentioned that you were able to get X running but certain fonts
>were missing.... What were the error message or output from that
>session.

Yes, after I successfully installed all KDE2.0.1 rpms I can startx right
into KDE, see the splash screen, Kandalf's useful tips, the tool bar and
three folders on the desktop. If a window is open (e. g. the Kandalf's tips
screen in the beginning) I can read the window title and all buttons with no
problem and all icons are fine.

>You didn't include the output of `chkfontpath' ... That may be usefull.

I had it available but forgot to add it - dooh ! Here it is:

Current directories in font path:

>
>$ startx >startx.file 2>&1

>That should leave a file in ~/ named startx.file that contains all
>output including error output arising from the startx command.

Ok, the output is attached, I started the session, closed the tips window
and logged out again. The stratx output looks a bit scarry to me anyways,
but I don't really know what it all means.

Maybe that puts some light on it.

Thank you very much for your help,

                                                Greez
