Hi Ted,
Often the Mandrake package will work, assuming you have an i586 class
machine or better. I've used several recently, in generaly whenever the
RHL7.0/Rawhide package requires glibc2.2 (I'm using RHL6.2).

However I take a few precautions. I run 'rpm -qpl package' and then 'rpm -iv
--test package'. First is just in case Mandrake puts things in places I
don't expect (rarely the case, and I usually still go ahead but make a
written note in my book that this program is 'weird'). Second isn't really
needed as a normal install should stop and complain if anything is wrong.

While they used to simply replace the logos and some names in the programs
from RedHat to Mandrake then rebuild for i586, it now looks like they have
taken a 6.x distro as a base and are gradually modifying it into their
version of the ideal Linux distribution.
