In all honesty, the best bet with Linux is to use an external modem,
rather than the PCI based modems. Most of them are Winmodems, meaning
that most of the functionality resides in the system, not in the modem
itself. Some of them are hardware based, but are still a bit difficult to
finagle under Linux.
