I can't **BELIEVE** it's that slow.... I used to run Linux a 486DX100,
though a 2.0.x kernel, not a 2.2, and it wasn't anything like as slow as
you describe. I also didn't run X very much because it didn't have 
either enough horsepower or RAM to do it justice, but for text-mode
stuff it was fine. BogoMips was, if I recall, somewhere around 48-50.
That box had (at first) 16 megs then later up to 32 megs RAM and 256kb
cache. Based on your earlier postings, it sounds as if the "turbo" mode
isn't working. 

When it finally gets booted, how much total RAM does it show when you run
top (or free)? Does it show all the physical RAM you actually have?
Perhaps it's swapping like mad, making it slow?
