I've been following the posts on this list Re. kernel compilation as I'm
having similar problems since upgrading to RH7. I've installed all the
relevant errata and edited the makefiles to use kgcc for the compile,
and still when I "make modules" I get loads of warnings...
Warning: Assembler Messages
Warning: Ignoring changed attributes for .modinfo
...the build appears to complete ok but on closer inspection many of the
modules haven't been built. This occurs with every kernel version I've
tried to compile: 2.2.18; 2.4.0 and the stock 2.2.16-xx that ships with
the distro. All would compile cleanly under RH 6.1 with the same .config
file.
After much frustration and experimentation I discovered that it would
all work if I used the binutils package from 6.1 ( 2.9.0 .23-6) however
this breaks some dependancies, notably with gcc-c++ and I've got some
stuff that I want to install from source that needs this.
As I haven't seen any postings about problems with binutils I wonder if
maybe something specific to my hardware setup that's causing the problem
with the assembler:- I'm running a Celeron 466 on an Abit BE6 with 64Mb
of RAM.
Anyone any ideas ?

cheers

Steff
