Turn it on... ;)
Due to the possibility of locking up non APM machines the kernel comes with
it off.
You will need to change your configuration to make it work.
It is as simple as turning it on and recompiling the kernel in most cases.
(Unless of course your computer is one of the few that have buggy APM.)
I would try updating your BIOS to the latest if possible before trying the
APM since some BIOS's have issues with it depending on how old they are.
