Hi,
this is the posting from mr birav at linuxindia.org i hope it will be
help full
Contrary to popular myth, Linux now supports many PCI winmodems.
Here a small writeup describing my experience with one such modem
using a PCTel chipset.
The Odyssey 56kbps PCI modem is available easily. The distributor
is Compuage (In Secunderabad, it is located in Pereira Building
(adjacent
to Minerva House), on S.D. Road. The modem is great value for money at
Rs 750/-. It uses the PCT789T-A chipset made by PCTel. This chipset
is also used on many motherboards which have on-board modems.
The modem has been found to be working satisfactorily under
Redhat 6.2, using kernel 2.2.16-3 (upgraded from the PCQ CD).
I got it working by following the steps below -
1)Download pctel_pci.o. You can get it in two ways
a) From http://members.nbci.com/netllama/pctel_pci.o
OR
b) Extract it from pctel-kernel-2.2.16-driver-cdl-v1.0_1.0.deb
This file is available on many mirrors of Corel Linux
Search on google and you will find it easily. One URL is given
below -
ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/linux/CorelLinux/dists/corellinux-1.2/corel/binary-i386/utils/pctel-kernel-2.2.16-driver-cdl-v1.0_1.0.deb
I used alien to convert it to tgz , and extracted pctel_pci.o
You must be root to do the remaining steps.
2) Copy pctel_pci.o to /lib/modules/2.2.16-3/misc/ directory.
Change the owner and group to root if needed.
Run "depmod -a"
3) Do a "mknod /dev/ttyS15 c 62 79"
followed by "ln -s /dev/ttyS15 /dev/modem"
4) Run "insmod -f pctel_pci country_code=6"
If you want to make this to automatically load upon
bootup, you can add an alias line to /etc/conf.modules
The country code is for UK. I just tried it and it worked
for me. If it does not detect the dialtone for you, you
may need to try other country codes (Check out the Linmodem-HOWTO).
Or use ATX1 in your PPP/Minicom dialler init string to ignore
the dialtone (blind dialling).
For more info , see the Linmodem-HOWTO, as well as the winmodem page at
