    I do not know how RH 6.2 will behave but last time I used "startx" I got an
xterm with no window decorations and no ability to move the window around.
This could make a newbie say that Linux sucks.

    I knew I had to start a window manager so  fixing this was not difficult for
me,
but for a newbie it would be daunting since they would need to know what a
window manager is and how to configure a .xinitrc file to start it. Then
figuring out
which environment they prefer gnome or KDE  and configuring the system as such.

    So, Yes it is a lot safer, but it might not get him what he wants...

    The inittab issue is in Chapter 2 of the RH guides as I recall.   It also
explains how
to avert a disaster after editing the file.

    His problem arose from not looking 3 times when installing the RH 6.2
version and seeing
the checkbox for enabling the graphical user interface login, but I digress...

I hope he was able to solve his problem in any way he saw fit.
