Why don't you set it up to start in text mode (init level 3).
Once that is working do a new setup of the X config stuff manually and I bet
everything will be fine. Of course you will be restarting the Xwindows with
'startx'.
I have it installed and working GREAT on a new DELL machine and am very happy.
