Were you using the same port on the hub that you had the Linux box
plugged into? If so, did you change a switch setting for the port?
If it was the same port, and you didn't change a setting from normal to
uplink for the modem to work, then that is your problem. How many ports
does the hub have?

You have proven that your software settings work, or you it would have
failed with the crossover cable. What happens if you just have one of
the windows machines and the Linux machine pluged into the hub? (The
one that worked with the crossover cable.) This way, we can check if it
the two windows machines inter-acting and causing a problem.
