Come on...if he's going from a 2.2.x kernel to
2.4.whatever...prerelease or otherwise, it's still an upgrade.

The questions I have for Ted are:

1) In what form did you download the kernel?

2) If tar.gz, did you go to the /usr/src directory and tar -xz the
file there?  If so, it would have created a /usr/src/linux directory
for you.

You have to untar the sources, somewhere, and then traverse into that
directory to compile it.
