Ideally, you're using mirroring because you want some sort of fault
tolerance...
so, yes, your disks should be on separate controllers. After all , if the
controller was handling both disks and it failed, you'd have a dead system,
so what was the point of mirroring?
Performance.. depends on the RAID controller you're using... on a good 'un,
you should get an improvement in concurrent reads, as both disks can
alternate to supply your request.
Writes have to be to both disks before the write is deemed successful. So
there is a performace hit there.
Chances are you'll notice neither write-hit nor read-gain unless you've got
an underspecified system
