Just a note along these lines... I think ping has changed a little. It
seems with RH 7.0 you need the -n option to keep it from trying to reverse
the IP address and get a domain name. If you don't use -n and your machine
cannot reach a DNS for some reason, ping seems to wait for the resolution
to time out before it starts.

I've not researched this, but I've observed similar. Adding an entry to
/etc/hosts makes it "work" because your machine checks that file before
trying to contact a DNS.

I hope that helps in some way.
