You compare it against the md5 checksum of the .iso that you burned to CD,
which should be the as the md5 checksum contained in the file MD5SUM in
the ftp directory from where you downloaded the .iso.

Correct, but some Windows software will burn an iso file to the cd instead
of a filesystem, AFAIK I use Linux to burn my iso files.
