You probably have been hacked, as you guessed.
The best advice I can give you is:
1.- Take the system off the Internet.
2.- Make a backup of your data.
3.- Format the hard drive.
4.- Reinstall the system.
5.- PATCH AND UPDATE YOUR SOFTWARE.
6.- Reinstall any programs you had installed.
7.- Restore your data.
8.- Subscribe to the redhat-watch mailing list
and the CERT Advisory mailing list, and update
programs for any vulnerabilities that come out
9.- Keep a backup of your data always so you don't
lose anything if it happens again, some hackers
will destroy your machine and data.
