No, /dev/hd** is for IDE drives, /dev/sd* is for SCSI drives -- /dev/sda1 would be 
correct it partition 1 is where / is, however ususally partition 1 is swap, partition 
2 is /boot, and partition 3 is /, which means the line actually needs to say root = 
/dev/dsa3 .

Does your boot =  line say boot = /dev/sda? It probably should.
