If you build a boot disk that knows what your root partition is, you can
boot off the floppy with no problems. mkbootdisk does a good job of
this. The you can boot from the floppy, and run lilo to restore the
MBR. You do not have to modify /etc/lilo.conf to boot from a floppy.
You can also also just put the lilo boot loader on the floppy by
changing the boot device in /etc/lilo.conf, and run lilo, but you will
have to put the floppy back in and re-run lilo every time you make a
change in lilo.conf, or install a new kernel. You are better off making
a ful boot disk.
