thanks for the suggestion, but this route is too expensive for my tastes.
i can get two PCI Netgear phoneline adapters from about $40.  i haven't
seen any wireless setups for less than $250.  i will either go with the
phoneline cards or run cat5 to the other room (i have lots of cat5 and
quite a few extra 486's).  i would prefer to not run the cat5 since this is
an apartment.  I'm okay with using the phoneline cards, it's just that i
would rather not have an extra Win32 box whose only role is to forward
packets through the phoneline.  i know that there is an ethernet to
phoneline transceiver, but it is also cost-prohibitive.  linux drivers
would be ideal for this situation.
