I apologize in advance for the lenth of this mail. As a result of gathering
info on this problem, I developed some questions.

Configuration:
RHL 7.0
sendmail 8.11.0
ppp 2.3.11
All my mail comes in via IMAP, so I don't run sendmail as a daemon.

About a week and a half ago, my outgoing mail from my RHL7.0 boxes was
behaving strangely. When I connect I have ip-up.local fire off
"/usr/sbin/sendmail -q" and it used to just spew out the mail and be done with
it. However, the "strange" behavior is that there would be little blips on my
ppp traffic meter for 30-45 seconds before the messages would go out.
last night, thrre were just minutes of blips leading to failure like:

(Deferred: Name server: xxxx.journey.com: host name lookup fa)

xxxx.journey.com is the modified name of my smart-host.

First thing I suspect is an ISP problem. They claim they aren't having any
issues and I believe them.

I can ping the smart-host just fine. I can also ping the destination of the
messages that are queued.

So, to eliminate the ISP-problem issue, I redid my sendmail.cf file and took
out the smart-host entry. That helped: I still got the strange delays, but
for most hosts, the mail went out. That makes me wonder:
*Why does one need the SMART_HOST entry in sendmail.cf?*

However, that didn't fix the problem or the mail would just shoot out w/o
delay (besides, one still failed).

When running "sendmail -q -v" to get more info, I noticed this in the output
(no SMART_HOST):

        Running /var/spool/mqueue/f3CGJUd11831 (sequence 1 of 1)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Connecting to mail00.michix.net. via esmtp...

What is esmtp? Is that something new?

When I had the SMART_HOST setting turned on to my ISP, I got:

        Running /var/spool/mqueue/f3CGJUd11831 (sequence 1 of 1)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Connecting to mail00.michix.net. via esmtp...

I'm just not sure what the problem might be. It doesn't seem to be a DNS
problem because I can ping the hosts to whom I'm sending. Therefore, it
doesn't seem to be a problem with my ISP.

Any help appreciated!

-Michael

No, my friend, the way to have good and safe government, is not to trust it
all to one, but to divide it among the many, distributing to every one exactly
the functions he is competent to. It is by dividing and subdividing these
republics from the national one down through all its subordinations, until it
ends in the administration of every man's farm by himself; by placing under
every one what his own eye may superintend, that all will be done for the
best.
