Aside from the things that Mikkel already recommended in another reply, I'd
definitely take a look around to make sure the system was not compromised.
Take a peek at files such as /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow, run the 'last' and
'lastlog' commands since those are usually broken by crackers to remove
important information about their activities, see if you can download the
chkrootkit, copy it onto a floppy and run it to search the system for possible
rootkits, etc. Finally, what do you get in the /var/log/messages? Boot in
single user mode and take a peek in there. It always provides really good
clues as to what is going on.
Oh, also try to switch to a console (Ctrl+Alt+F2) and try to log in from
there. Just in case. Sometimes, gdm/xdm/kdm are causing the problem.
