Qt has had Xft/Xrender support added to it already, and GTK has
not, that is why you can get AA in Qt, and not in GTK.

Yes you can take advantage of Xrender without modifying GTK - by
using Qt, or by using Xrender/Xft libraries directly.  That won't
be a GTK app anymore though.  ;O)
