As others have noted, install the php-mysql package.  I'd urge you to NOT
leave phpMyAdmin open.  That is, restrict access to it via username/password
at the very least.  IMHO, it's better still to leave that off of the box
altogether and just use the monitor from the command line to make your
changes to your dbs..
