You can create the HOSTNAME file & give it the following permission

-rw-r--r--    1 root     root            8 Nov  2 10:12 /etc/HOSTNAME

This file stores your system's host name, your system's fully qualified
domain name -FQDN, such as gary.yourdomain.com

After making the relavant changes in the config files you can as root do the
following

/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart

This should restart your network, by doing this you wont have to reboot your
machine.
