Ben,
Linux sometimes really s***s ... I'd bet this will not be the last
situation (provided courage returns and you'll try again :)) that
you've had it ... but in most situations there will be
a solution sooner or later, in others perhaps never, sorry ...
I'm rather new to Linux. I started running that operating system
in Summer 2000, and if I remember correctly, I had about 30-45
Linux-installs in this whole time, some of them worked, some didn't ...
I screwed up my Redhat6.1 some weeks ago this summer ... everything
was more or less completely destroyed ... I didn't have any back up
for my system, which meant, my work of a whole year having been
disappeared in digital Nirvana: notes about what I learned,
my personal HOW-TO's in a way, the whole Linux Software I downloaded
in this time ... I to started again a RedHat system from nowhere with
nothing available than a redhat cd ... I didn't start again because I
liked it. I hated it, because I knew how much work I had to do to build
the whole system again ...
... but I started again for one single reason: I wanted to know (and I
still do) how a computer works: I'm rather sure I can't learn this as
easy as with Linux .. and although it's really not that easy :), at least
it's probably much easier than trying the same learning with a boring Doze
system.
So if someone simply wants some Internet browsing or writing his/her emails
it's *perhaps* a good idea to install a Windoze system (not even being sure on
this last point :))... but if she or he is really interested in learning
how such a machine works I do not know a better possibility than learning
it with Linux.
In spite of the fact that Linux sometimes really s***s.
Good luck, Ben ... we probably need it when using computers :).
Regards
Wolfgang
PS: my installs usually went smoother when I made them in text rather
than GUI mode ... don't know why ...
