just an aside about mounting dos/vfat partitions.  i just tested this with
a dos floppy and, even if it's a vfat filesystem, you can still use
"-t msdos" or, better yet, leave off the -t option entirely since it
will be autodetected.

and, although it's not mentioned in the man page for mount, can't
you just put the word "auto" in the 3rd field representing the 
filesystem type in /etc/fstab, to let mount figure it out for itself?
