Switchdesk is the easiest way to change your default from Gnome (or
KDE) to FVWM2.

XFCE is also on the Redhat Powertools CD as an RPM file. It works
really well - speed is similar to FVWM2 but it's just so much more
aesthetic. Switchdesk doesn't (by default) support XFCE.  You can set
XFCE as your default desktop by creating a file .xinitrc in your home
directory with the single command "startxfce".

I've found that Kmail doesn't work well in either FVWM2 or XFCE, so
you might want to consider using Sylpheed instead.
