Nope, I just didn't want to clutter up the mail with what seemed (at the time) to be irrelevant details. The turntable plugs into the phono input of my old (but still functional) Sony TA-1120 amp. The tape-loop output goes to the line input on the back of the sound card. (and, FWIW, the line out from the sound card goes to another amp that has the speakers attached). > work. See above. I can deal with the distortion by recording at a lower level. But that isn't (shouldn't :^) be the right answer. Since it's 16-bit digital sound, if I record so that the highest value is, say, 20,000 instead of 32767, I've lost a whole lot of bits of dynamic range, which means the quiet parts fade into the (digital) mud. You ask "But can you hear the difference?" and my anser is "I haven't a clue". But it concerns me that I need to do that to make it work, and would seem to indicate something not working right. > > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of fred smith > Sent: Thursday, December 27, 2001 8:30 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: recording sound with ES1371 > > > I'm working on learning how to rip audio off vinyl LPs so I can turn some > of my 30-40 year old collection of LPs into CDs. > > I'm having trouble, I believe, with my soundcard, Creative AudioPCI, > which uses the es1371 driver. > > I've used both gramofile and snd to capture some sound from the turnable, > and in both cases get quite a bit of distortion even though both tools > report that I have NOT had a high enough level to drive the system into > clipping (gramofile reports only a small number of samples above 90%, > NONE above 99, and NONE clipped).
