Not that this reall helps you, but I'd suspect a buggy driver for your video card. Have you tried starting it in run level 3 and not starting X and see if it still happens. I have a laptop that (at least it used to under RedHat 6.2 with an updated XFree to 4.0.3 which is the first that provided support for the video card) would hang when it sat idle for a while at 1024x768 (but not at 1400x1050). I haven't noticed it in a while, but the only time I run it at 1024x786 is when hooking it up to a video projector and I haven't done that lately.
