Presumably you know about the geek-news site "http://slashdot.org/" It's a very popular place and what happens its a story will be posted, containing a URL to another article, or a software download, or something similar, i.e. not on slashdot's server but elsewhere on the Internet. What would happen is, if it's a small server, it would be totally overwhelmed by "Slashdoters", meaning people who read Slashdot, going over to look at the article or download the software (or whatever). IT would be like a Denial-of-Service attack, except that rather then being malicious, it was unintentionally caused by a sudden huge increase in traffic. Kinda like being trampled by the crowd. Sometimes the person's network connection would be so saturated that they wouldn't even be able to send email. Anyway, the term has come to mean "what happens when a huge amount of people suddenly view your site/download your whatever/or otherwise connect to your computer" until you're server is totally swamped with traffic.
