I'd go with the latter since they're more common. Once you get the basic hang of regular expressions, it's not so bad... A good reference book is "Linux In A Nutshell" from O'Reilly. It even has a table to compare pattern matching in ed, ex, vi, sed, awk, grep, and egrep and a separate section just for perl matching. Isn't it nice to have a standard?
