This sounds like a job for mrtg with snmp!  SNMP is designed to get data
like this and I would surprised if your router didn't support it.  Go to
http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/mrtg/ for the mrtg home page.

Note that you should disable snmp on your external interface - make really
sure that it's enabled from inside your network only.
